Education Changed Life - says this Grandma!

When I shared a video of why not to discontinue girls' education, I received many responses, of which the response from an elderly lady was exceptional. She endorsed the same point about the Girls' education.

Here is the video if you missed watching.

When she was about 15 years old, she had to get married which was about 5 decades back. This was the time her SSLC results were yet to be announced. Nobody bothered about her education - be it her parents, husband or any relative.

After about a decade of married life, her husband was diagnosed with a serious heart issue. That is when everybody came up with free advice. Why don't you join a textiles factory or do a job available locally - all petty ideas came out.

As you can imagine, anybody at that time would have listened to such advice and would have joined a job out of fear and helplessness. However, the lady was firm and was only thinking about continuing her education.

But with a gap of 11 years that too 50 years back - one can imagine how difficult to get a seat anywhere. Contacted dozens of institutions only to get a NO. Totally, disappointed, yet with the determination, she contacted more colleges.

Finally, one Principal understood the scenario and approved her admission. It was a  Women’s College at Bangalore. There she continued her education – completed PUC. Later she completed her graduation as well

She was happy that she could finally complete her education. However, the happiness was about to shatter. After three years of her completing the education, her husband passed away due to the same heart ailment.

Now, needless to say, the entire responsibility of the kids and family was on her. The only thing which came in handy was education. Because she was eligible academically, she could get her husband’s job only.

It is only because she could continue her education, she was able to face the toughest phase of her life with the utmost courage.
.
So, what do you think? Education is important for everybody or not?

Experiencing the Magical Effects of the Beautiful Game

Make a Difference...

Poor Kids! It was a rainy day  and they were deprived of playing in the open ground. A ground amidst the graveyard that was compact and had just a couple of broken swings and stinking toilet around. Such is the fate of most government aided schools in India. Yet, playing there was a joyous act for the children. This was evident from the little-disappointed faces around. “Rain rain go away little children want to play” cried a small girl in me.  While children cursed the rain, I entered the classroom with slight nervousness and more excitement.  After all , it was my first interaction with the children. “Namaste Teacher,” said all the voice at once. “Good morning” was my response. Yes, I had to respond in English as I was there to conduct a short duration English learning sessions for the children. It’s very sad to know that a formal English class became a part of curriculum only from standard 5 here. “ Aidondli Aidu… Aideradli hathu ” “ Rajesha -...
